NewsChildline Zimbabwe launches the 116 App! During the Ninth Regional Consultation of Child Helplines in Africa in September 2017, Childline Zimbabwe officially launched their 116 App, demonstrating a huge step in reaching out to children and young people in the way that they like the most. The 116 App is an interactive mobile application that provides a preventative and responsible service to children and young people in need. It is built on recognising the need to embrace Information Communication Technology (ICT) developments in the lives of children today. With the click of a button, a child is linked to the helpline through both voice and chat platforms where they can interact with Childline Zimbabwe’s trained counsellors, who are available 24/7, but also virtual peer support services. The hub focusses on topics such as children’s rights, tips on detecting child abuse, study tips, adolescent sexual reproductive health rights and HIV/AIDS. All of which are updated regularly within the App through auto synchronisation. The App also boasts a variety of child-friendly media formats that are responsive to their modern-day needs. This includes video, audio, articles and animations. The App contains a service referral directory that informs children and young people of the other service providers in child protection, including police and legal assistance, but also their local Childline Zimbabwe drop-in centres for face-to-face counselling. The 116 App is free and confidential Above all, the App is completely free and confidential with a safe and sustainable reporting mechanisms that are linked to the child helpline. In order to enhance confidentiality the App even allows the chat to be deleted after the conversation has ended, reducing the possibility of victimisation. We are very proud of Childline Zimbabwe’s innovative approach to ensure that no child goes unheard!
