Congratulations, Najat – the new Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence Against Children!

We are delighted to announce that Child Helpline International’s esteemed Board Member, Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid of Morocco, has been appointed as Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence Against Children!

Dr. M’jid will be carrying the torch for the role’s revered predecessor (and Special Advisor to Child Helpline International’s Supervisory Board), Ms. Marta Santos Pais of Portugal, as she continues to promote and uphold the rights of children worldwide.
This special announcement was made on 30th May 2019 by the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.

Dr. M’jid possesses over three decades of experience in fighting for the rights of children. Her notable accomplishments include:

  • Being Head of the Paediatric Department and Director of the Hay Hassani Mother-Child hospital, Casablanca;
  • Being an active member of the Moroccan National Council on Human Rights;
  • Founding non-governmental organisation, Bayti: the first programme addressing the situation of Moroccan street children;
  • Serving as United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography between May 2008 and June 2014;
  • Chairing the high-level task force to end child sexual exploitation in travel and tourism;
  • Providing support to the study “Offenders on the Move: Global study on sexual exploitation of children in travel and tourism”; and,
  • Being a lecturer in Moroccan and international universities on the protection, promotion, programming and monitoring of child rights but also social and development policies.

Dr. M’jid is highly qualified for this position. She holds: a Doctorate in medicine from the University of Rabat, Morocco; a specialisation in paediatrics and neonatology from the University of Bordeaux II, France; and, a Master’s degree in Human Rights from the Human Rights Institute, Switzerland.
