International Child Helpline Day 2018: Kenya

In Kenya, there are 51.1 million internet users in a country of about 45 million people, interacting and transacting from the comfort of their own homes, using phones and other technology. Most of these internet users are children and young people. Through its network of partners Childline Kenya serves everyone under the age of 18.

Apart from providing a service to children and young people, Childline Kenya also employs young people to respond to the issues that come up. This initiative is called “young people for young people”. Childline Kenya has learned over time that children and young people feel more comfortable talking to and engaging with their peers. This approach also helps Childline Kenya to facilitate a generation of confident young people who can be role models for others.

Childline has, since July 2017, begun analysing data on utilisation of email and social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Whatsapp to access the child helpline services in addition to the telephone service. From July 2017 to April 2018 Childline Kenya have so far recorded up to 521 contacts through the social media.
