Dr Najat Maalla M’jid

Secretary of the Supervisory Board

What inspired me to become a board member of Child Helpline International was that as the chair and founder of Bayti, a Moroccan NGO aiming to protect children victims of violence, exploitation and discrimination, we had the pleasure to meet and work with the team of Child Helpline International. Furthermore, during my 6 years’ mandate as special rapporteur on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, I had useful contacts with the regional representative of Child Helpline International in the MENA region and after all my country visits recommended to her child sensitive complaints mechanisms which are easily accessible to all children.

Being a board member provides me the opportunity to contribute in strengthening Child Helpline International, to ensure its viability and sustainability. To this end, I will, thanks to my networks, do my best to develop strong partnerships and strategic alliances with key actors from public and private sectors, NGOs involved in the protection of children and their rights, at national, regional and international levels.

Dr. Najat served as UN Special Rapporteur on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography between May 2008 and June 2014. She is a medical doctor in paediatrics by profession and has been engaged for the past three decades in the protection of vulnerable children. Dr. Najat Maalla M’jid works as an Expert-Consultant in the development and monitoring of national policies on the protection of the child at national and international levels. She is a member of the Moroccan National Council on Human Rights and the founder of the non-governmental organisation BAYTI, the pioneer programme addressing the situation of children living and working in the streets in Morocco. Dr. Najat also serves as a member in several regional and international child rights platforms and is currently the Chair of the International Bureau of Children’s rights (Montréal-Canada).
