20.11.2009Twenty years Convention on the Rigths of the Child
All children have rights! And these rights are for all, no matter their economic status, country, religion, gender or age. Twenty years ago on 20 November 1989 the Convention on the Rights was adopted by the member states of the United Nations. The Convention guarantees the rights of all boys and girls to such things as basic education, a child hood free of violence, health care, a family life.
One of the pillars of the Convention is the right of every child to be heard and to have their opinion respected. Around the world, child helplines have this right at their core. Based on this principle, child helplines work to protect all rights of children. Sadly, daily millions of children world wide have their rights violated. They experience violence and abuse, are not allowed to go to school, are forced to perform child labour, or are refused access to health care. Child helplines receives millions of calls from children and abults about these and other issues. Child helplines work to address the issues that they learn about, alone or with other organisations. To call attention to the violations of children's rights that take place every day, CHI has taken out an advertisement in the biggest Dutch newspaper, Metro nieuws. To learn more about the Convention and the work of CHI and the child helplines to protect children's rights, go to our dedicated web page. |
