| How CHI began
At the International Consultation in 2001 in Pune, India, the need for a child helpline 'helpdesk' was discussed by child helplines themselves. This organisation was to provide support for existing helplines, but also to provide support to countries, especially economically developing countries, interested in initiating helplines in order to reach out to children with few or non existent child care services. CHILDLINE India, led by Jeroo Billimoria agreed to take on the strategic planning and consensus building amongst the helplines. This led to the 2003 consultation held Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, attended by representatives from 49 helplines, where Child Helpline International (CHI) was launched. Child Helpline International was officially launched in October 2003 to build, develop and maintain a network of children’s helplines throughout the world. From that day to the present, the CHI membership has been unstoppable; demonstrating an uncanny ability to look to the future by identifying innovative trends and adapting them to the needs of children around the world. |
