| The role of advocacy
When CHI was founded in 2003, advocacy was not the most pressing priority for member child helplines: building a solid membership base was. In 2006, with a solid foundation in place, advocacy became a critical aspect of CHI’s work. Throughout 2007, the efforts of the previous years were beginning to be realised and the Advocacy Department began a new phase of professionalisation. This new phase supports the strategic goals of CHI which, in turn, assist child helplines in their daily work. The Advocacy Department strives to ensure that its efforts are consistent with the desires of the membership, thus much of its output originates from discussions with members themselves through various CHI mediums, including: taskforce meetings, regular requests through email and international and regional consultations. The core advocacy goals for 2007-2010 together with the related key activities which reflect CHI’s advocacy efforts are: Improving the child protection system * Advocating for toll-free, 3-4 digit, easy-to-remember telephone numbers at the national, regional and international levels; * Speaking at conferences around the world on children’s issues and child helplines, highlighting the latter as key tools towards child protection on a global scale. Increasing the recognition of children’s voices * Collecting data on the reasons why children call child helplines around the world, and documenting this information in CHI’s annual publication, Connecting to Children; * Participating in UN processes by regularly submitting recommendations to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child; collaborating on the UN Secretary General’s Study on Violence Against Children; and working with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU); * Strengthening partnerships with other NGOs. Establishing an effective global network of child helplines * Meeting the needs of members through their participation in CHI taskforces (Advocacy, Data and PSP) Facilitating adequate response to all children in need of care and protection * Developing tailor-made manuals and trainings for child helplines: Child Participation, Fundraising and Good Governance |
