Advocating for child helplines
Providing opportunities for child helplines to meet with one another, either in real-time or via the Child Helpline International (CHI) Secretariat is an essential aspect of CHI. To have an impact on the lives of children throughout the world, our members must pull together and advocate for children’s rights before key players and policy-makers. Child Helpline International advocates on a regional and global level for children and their rights as set down in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), be that with children’s networks, governments, the International Telecommunications Union, other UN bodies or the private sector. In partnership with child helplines, CHI contributes to the country reviews carried out by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The UNCRC is an international treaty that outlines the basic rights to which every child is entitled. Linking data with the CRC recommendations is important for the future of child policy at the UN level. In 2004, CHI began submitting recommendations to the Committee on behalf of its members in support of child helplines. The recommendations rely on the data supplied by the member helpline. From 2004 – 2007, the Committee highlighted the need to build or strengthen child helplines to 39 national governments in their concluding observations. This is a strong endorsement of the work performed by child helplines and Child Helpline International, as well as a strong advocacy tool for emerging and existing child helplines towards their governments and telecommunications partners. Advocacy is about influencing key stakeholders and decision-makers to design, implement and change policies and practices that will directly benefit a particular group. At CHI, the Advocacy Department advocates before UN Bodies, government leaders, and other networks for the recognition of child helplines as a critical tool towards child protection. |
